About 1km further away and closer to the campsite, is the Askeaton Castle ruin. It is near the medieval bridge across the tidal Deel River which is flowing at a great rate! The Great Tower was built in the 1500s and is the first thing you notice. Just to the left is the 'Hellfire Club' under renovation. It was an old gentleman's club where, in the mid 1700s, the rich and powerful visited for a good time.
